This article presents the first report of an ongoing study of entrepreneurial interventions in the favela of Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, supported by the first round of the Intelligent Favela funding to support bases for the social and Sustainable Innovation Park of the Carlos Chagas Filho Foundation for Support and Research of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ). The scope of this study has two main axes: monitoring a set of 12 entrepreneurial interventions in the favela of Rocinha and developing and applying the Territorial Effectuation Monitoring (TEM), based on a mix of situational procedures, Effectuation and Business Model Canvas (BMC) based design science methods based on Effectuation and Business Model Canvas (BMC). Among the results obtained, the following stand out: i) the development and application of Territorial Effectuation Monitoring (TEM) may be the most original contribution of the current study; ii) the identification of recurrent alternations of effectual and causal logics in the different stages of maturity of the firms in the sample; and iii) the configuration of relational networks in entrepreneurial action may be a key issue for understanding the sources of innovation in favelas.
